Emma had stopped expecting her father to come home.
She had learned, slowly and painfully, that some people don’t come back.
A year had passed since the funeral.
Her mother rarely talked about him anymore. His clothes had been packed away. His photographs had been placed in a drawer. Even his name seemed to disappear from their conversations.
But on Emma’s seventh birthday, something happened that neither of them could explain.
She was sitting alone at the kitchen table, watching the small flame on her birthday candle flicker in the darkness.
Her mother was in the next room.
Then the phone rang.
Emma looked at the screen.
Her smile disappeared.
The name displayed on the phone was:
Dad.
She didn’t move.
For several seconds, she simply stared at it.
Her father had been dead for exactly one year.
The phone continued ringing.
Finally, with trembling fingers, Emma answered.
“Hello?”
Nothing.
Only silence.
Then she heard breathing.
And after a few seconds, a voice she hadn’t heard since the day her father died whispered:
“Sweetheart…”
Emma’s eyes filled with tears.
“Dad?”
There was another long silence.
Then he said something that made her blood run cold.
“Don’t let Mom open the blue box.”
The call ended.
Emma slowly looked toward the doorway.
Her mother was standing there.
She had heard everything.
But instead of looking confused, she looked terrified.
Emma had never seen her mother look like that before.
“Mom?” she whispered.
Her mother didn’t answer.
Her eyes were fixed on the old wooden cabinet in the corner of the room.
The cabinet had been locked for as long as Emma could remember.
Her mother walked toward it slowly.
Then she stopped.
Emma followed her gaze.
Behind the glass was a small blue box covered in dust.
A box Emma had never seen before.
“What’s in there?” she asked.
Her mother closed her eyes.
A tear rolled down her cheek.
Then she whispered:
“Your father never told you what happened that night…”
Emma stared at her.
“What night?”
Her mother reached for the cabinet key.
And that was when Emma noticed something strange.
The key wasn’t in her mother’s hand.
It was already sitting inside the lock.
As if someone had unlocked it from the other side.
What happened that night?
And why did Emma’s dead father want her to stay away from the blue box?
